Some are probably wondering: Why is Saskatchewan the only place in the country using the notwithstanding clause to govern pronoun use?
What’s been obvious since Premier Scott Moe declared he intends to go to war over the pronoun policy in schools is that this has been a policy driven by its political popularity. But are such drastic measures still as popular in Saskatchewan as Moe thinks?
There’s probably even some within that majority of “parental rights” supporters who don’t much like or understand anyone proclaiming a pronoun preference. Some within this group see the pronoun debate as too “woke” because they believe gender identity to be determined at birth and unalterable. They surely don’t see massive conspiracies and don’t relate to those conspiracy theorists now taking full credit for influencing Moe on what — at the very least — now seems a horribly misguided approach.More than a few are now a little curious how an issue they previously heard nothing about has suddenly become the most pressing thing in the province, meriting an early recall of the legislature. The Sask. Party government didn’t even do this when it was fighting the carbon tax.
