Some nations said it will begin on March 11, while some will observe the holy month on March 12.

Muslim worshippers take part in evening prayers called "Tarawih" during the eve of the first night of the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan, at Amr Ibn El-Aas mosque in old Cairo, Egypt.

Egypt’s Islamic advisory body the Dar al-Ifta also confirmed Ramadan would begin on March 11, as it will in the Palestinian Territories including Gaza, and in Algeria and Tunisia.Iran had earlier set the beginning of Ramadan for March 12 after its “Estehlal” moon observation office said it had not been possible to observe “the crescent of Ramadan”.

As he announced March 12 as the start of Ramadan in Jordan, the kingdom’s Grand Mufti Ahmed Hasnat asked God to “relieve the anguish of our oppressed people in Gaza” and “lift affliction and aggression from them”.During Ramadan, observant Muslims refrain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk, and traditionally gather with family and friends to break their fast in the evening.

Mr Hassuna added that instead of spending Ramadan in their homes, “it is clear that we will live in displacement, pain and oppression.”
