With 31 hospitals earning a top grade, New Jersey was ranked 12th best in the nation, according to the Leapfrog Group biannual safety report card.
No hospital in New Jersey flunked, but four earned Ds — two more than last time— and 19 earned C’s. Of the 69 hospitals evaluated, 30 earned A’s and 16 earned Bs, according to the report.
On the six measures measuring a hospital’s success preventing urinary tract infections, post-surgery sepsis and other infections, Holy Name performed below average on every one, the report said. But Holy Name earned four above-average score and one average score on the doctor and nurse responsiveness and communication with patients.
“While making healthcare decisions, it’s critical for patients not to simply rely on one report but to also consult with trusted family and healthcare providers,” Garretson added. Linda Schwimmer, president and CEO of the New Jersey Health Care Quality, a nonprofit research and consumer advocacy organization, praised the hospitals for their continued participation in the scoring process.
Leapfrog is a nonprofit that large employers and other health care purchasers created 22 years ago to improve safety. The work was a response to the 1999 Institute of Medicine report that found as many“The health care workforce has faced unprecedented levels of pressure during the pandemic, and as a result, patients’ experience with their care appears to have suffered,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.
