Nanaimo RCMP has received several reports of online extortion and is asking anyone with information to contact them.

Last month, a man told Nanaimo RCMP he’d received a “threatening email” from someone with the email address masonburton357@gmail.com.

The suspect also knew the complainant’s full name and phone number. He had attached a PDF with instructions on where to send the bitcoin, as well as a Google street view image of the complainant’s home. The man who received the email says he does not have any “dark web content” and plans to ignore the email. However, he wanted to ensure others were warned of this type of online activity.Earlier this year, a woman told RCMP that she received an email from kenn.sabo11@hgmail.com that claimed the sender had “hacked the complainant’s computer and was in possession of compromising pictures and videos of the complainant’s online activities.

Attached to the email was a Google street view image of the complainant’s residence. No money was sent and the email was deleted.
