Lai, a longstanding critic of the Chinese Communist Party, is one of the most high-profile figures to face prosecution under the law. Diplomats are actively observing the court hearings in person, with this case seen as a key test for Hong Kong’s judicial independence. Lai said in giving his first court testimony on Nov 20 that he had never sought to influence the foreign policy of other countries, such as the US, towards China and Hong Kong.
Prosecutors also said they had identified a syndicate led by Lai, which they said included activists, his aide, rights campaigners, a Japanese congresswoman and a US financier.
