NBL Final Postponed After Adroit Field Suspended Players in Match-Fixing Probe

The NBL Division 1 final has been delayed due to Adroit fielding suspended players who are under investigation for allegedly fixing matches. The Basketball Association of Singapore is conducting a review and disciplinary procedures.

The National Basketball League (NBL) Division 1 final scheduled for August 30 has been postponed to September 7 following a controversy involving the defending champions, Adroit . The postponement comes after Adroit was found to have fielded suspended players in their semi-final win against Siglap on August 27. The Basketball Association of Singapore (BAS) announced this decision on August 29, stating that it takes a firm stance against actions that compromise the integrity of the sport.

The BAS emphasized the need for a thorough internal review and disciplinary procedures, ultimately leading to the postponement. They apologized for any inconvenience caused to the teams and stakeholders involved, while also stressing the importance of adhering to due process to ensure accountability and uphold the integrity of the game. The suspensions of the players in question remain in effect as the BAS conducts a full review of the incident, determining if further disciplinary action is warranted. This controversy stems from a wider match-fixing investigation by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB). On August 19, the CPIB arrested nine individuals, including current and former national players, from various NBL clubs, for their suspected involvement in fixing matches. The alleged fixing includes Tagawa’s 66-43 win over Tong Whye on August 1. Adroit coach Chan Sian Gay has challenged the BAS's grounds for suspending the two players involved, arguing that no charges have been filed against them and the club intends to fight for their right to play. He highlighted inconsistencies, citing players who were arrested but not suspended and continued to play. Chan also suggested that the entire league season be annulled, emphasizing the damage this controversy has inflicted on the competition's integrity
