North Carolina State, 11th seeded in the South after being the 10th seed in its own Atlantic Coast Conference, found a new path it displayed by upsetting No. 2 seed Marquette, 67-58, in the first game at AAC.The Wolfpack starts four grad students. The Wolfpack starts five players who began their careers at Illinois State, Stanford, Missouri, Virginia and Winthrop.
Marquette had nothing going for it most of the night besides Kolek, one of two left-handed guards that starts for the team and the one that surely must have grown up watching a rare collection of Sarunas Marciulionis tapes in order to build his physical game that still includes a deft shooting touch. Kolek made eight of 18 shots while the rest of the Golden Eagles went 12-for-42.
The shots did not fall Friday night. At all. So it’s the Wolfpack that moves ahead, and I suppose it’s the trademark of an 11 seed that they are going to be a bit unpredictable. NC State has now won seven straight games since it was 17-14. The Wolfpack had much more trouble disposing of 14-seed Oakland, needing overtime Saturday, than it did to put away a top 10 team Friday night.”We don’t have to talk about that history now because we celebrate it the entire time,’’ Keatts said.
