Following resident reports of a strong gas or chemical smell across central Singapore, the National Environment Agency confirmed it is monitoring the situation and investigating the source, though air quality readings have stayed within normal limits.
The National Environment Agency ( NEA) reported receiving numerous public feedback starting around 11pm on Thursday, July 16, regarding a distinct gas or chemical-like odor detected across several central region areas of Singapore, including Tanjong Rhu, Kallang, and Novena.
In response, the agency promptly conducted on-site air quality assessments and has been continuously monitoring readings from the nearest air quality monitoring stations. By Friday, July 17, NEA announced that air quality measurements in those parts remained within the usual range, indicating no immediate hazardous levels. The agency emphasized its commitment to ongoing monitoring and investigation to identify the exact source of the unusual smell.
A resident from Toa Payoh, who preferred anonymity, described the odor as sudden, very distinct, and almost pungent, noting she first noticed it around 10:15pm. As a precaution, her family decided to close all windows.
Meanwhile, AsiaOne's checks found no reports of chemical or gas leak incidents in neighboring regions such as Johor or Batam that could be linked to the event. NEA reminded the public they can report any future unusual odors through the myENV or OneService mobile applications
