It said the Israeli army, meanwhile, was settling operational issues and readying the evacuation of the civilian population in Rafah in preparation for a ground operation that Mr Netanyahu had green-lit. Hamas presented a Gaza ceasefire proposal to mediators and the United States that includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for the freedom of Palestinian prisoners, 100 of whom are serving life sentences, according to a proposal seen by Reuters.
“We are talking about reaching a ceasefire in Gaza, meaning a truce, providing the biggest quantity of aid,” he told Egypt’s police academy. He also warned against the dangers of an Israeli incursion into Rafah, on the border with Egypt. The conflict has spread to other parts of the volatile Middle East. Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah has frequently exchanged fire with Israel along the border.

Biden Shifts Rhetoric on Israel-Hamas War, Emphasizing Need for Temporary CeasefireAn Israeli offensive in Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians have sought refuge, would complicate efforts toward a halt in the war. United States President Joe Biden spent months wanting a “pause” in the fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. But with Israel preparing for a ground offensive in Rafah, his rhetoric is shifting to emphasise the need for a “temporary ceasefire”. It sounds like a slight rhetorical difference, but it is one that inches Mr Biden closer to many around the world and to critics within his own Democratic Party who want a permanent ceasefire to a war in which nearly 30,000 Palestinians have been killed.
