I write about TV shows like House Of The Dragon, The Witcher, The Rings Of Power, Stranger Things, Yellowjackets, Severance and many others. I also cover movies, video games, comic books and novels, largely in the fantasy, science-fiction, horror and superhero genres.
On the one hand, I binged it in three evenings, something I haven’t done with a TV series in a long time. On the other hand, I walked away with a whole bunch of questions and complaints about how the story was structured, even outside of the normal issues with time travel paradoxes.
In 1941, as German bombs litter the city, DS Whiteman gets caught up with the body and comes face to face with the antisemitism that was rampant even in England at the time. The mystery unfolds in a pretty dramatic and intriguing way, but it’s the strength of the four investigators—and the mysterious Elias Mannix —that really drives the story forward. Each of these people is a fish out of water, leading a life where their outsider status fundamentally impacts their life for better or worse.
At the same time, I’m not sure the eight episodes were used very economically. You could probably have fleshed out some stuff while also cutting out other stuff and gotten away with just six.
