Eastern General Hospital in Bedok North will be ready in 2030, but some services like "virtual" wards can be expected around 2026.
When the hospital campus is fully opened, it will have about 1,400 beds, offering inpatient and outpatient services across a range of clinical specialties and care settings. Several new and unique features will be incorporated into EGH, differentiating it from other general hospitals in Singapore, said Mr Ong.
That built-in flexibility means working spaces can be quickly segregated and new work arrangements can be supported amid a pandemic, without having to make major infrastructure changes. "As we are aware, Changi General Hospital is facing a challenging capacity crunch and shouldering the rising healthcare needs of residents in the eastern region," he said.
Selected patients with conditions classified under general medicine, like skin infections, can be admitted to a"virtual" ward, where they will have round-the-clock access to care delivered by a team of healthcare professionals via teleconsultations and home visits until deemed fit for discharge.
