“It’s time that we stop thinking of our jails as mental health centers in Washington,” Gov. Jay Inslee said.
State and local leaders gathered at Kirkland City Hall Wednesday to introduce a new mental health crisis center.
Inslee and King County Executive Dow Constantine said this will be an alternative to jail, so police can take a person causing problems on the street to get help instead of being locked up. King County Councilmember Rod Dembowski said this will be cheaper than jail, which can cost hundreds of dollars a day to house just one person — especially if mental health services are part of that.
The crisis center will open sometime next year and will have the capacity to serve around 14,000 people every year.
