New plan unveiled to restore Frank Lloyd Wright’s Kalita Humphrey’s Theater
A rendering shows a restored Kalita Humphreys Theater from the Katy Trail. Dallas Theater Center on Wednesday released a new master plan for the theater and William B. Dean Park.
The plan would achieve the long-sought goal of linking the Kalita and Dean Park to the Katy Trail. Three of the new buildings would have “green” roofs accessible directly from the trail, with new overlooks, a café and a casual restaurant. A handicap-accessible path for pedestrians and cyclists would lead from the Katy down to and then across a new bridge over Turtle Creek.
A new, subterranean lobby would be the most significant alteration to the theater. It would connect to a three-level garage and the black-box theater. The lobby would route visitors into the basement of the Kalita, where stairs and an elevator would lead up to the theater level and to the rooftop terrace above it. That basement space has been altered beyond recognition; the new design would actually bring it closer to Wright’s original.
At principal issue is the need for and placement of so much new building in Dean Park. “I worry about the precedent that this sets with our park spaces,” says Rudy Karimi, the Park Board representative from District 14. “What’s stopping the rest of our public spaces from being considered in some of these transformations? I just believe that parks should be parks.”
“When you get up to the top of that building, you get to witness the new site, which is very, very green,” says Renfro.
