A new theory suggests that the sudden drop experienced by a LATAM Airlines flight from Sydney to Auckland may have been caused by an issue with the electric seat mechanism in the cockpit, pushing the pilot into the flight controls. LATAM Airlines has referred to the incident as a 'technical event' and no official reason for the drop has been reported yet. Former Qantas pilot Richard de Crespigny supports the theory, citing a similar incident on a Royal Air Force flight.
A new theory has emerged about why a LATAM Airlines flight lost altitude on a route from Sydney to Auckland on Monday, injuring up to 50 passengers and crew. It was reported by The Daily Telegraph on Thursday the sudden drop may have been a result of an issue with the electric seat mechanism in the cockpit, which then pushed the pilot into the flight controls of the Boeing 787-9 .
LATAM Airlines has labelled the incident a “technical event”, and there has been no report yet on the reason for the drop. However, on Thursday, former Qantas pilot Richard de Crespigny appeared on Sunrise, where he said the electric seat mechanism theory was entirely possible, with a similar incident occurring on a Royal Air Force A-330 flight
