Heartbreaking ...

We are heartbroken to learn about the death of Firefighter Mark Batista, who died Friday while swimming at the Jersey Shore,” the department said.

The ANSWER team said they responded around 8:30 a.m. to reports of two swimmers in distress at Sylvania Avenue Beach in Avon-by-the-Sea. Rescuers were able to quickly find and rescue the girl but were unable to save Batista, a post said. An hourlong search was launched with rescue swimmers, divers, jet ski boats and a drone to find the father. At around 10 a.m., a US Coast Guard helicopter identified a "possible location" for the father and rescue swimmers removed him from the water.
