The 39-year-old leader said in a televised address that she will keep schools open for now, in a similar policy employed in neighboring Australia. “Sending children home at this stage, though, doesn’t necessarily reduce transmission in the community,” she said, “but I can assure you we are constantly monitoring these settings to keep children safe. As a mum, I can assure you that is my key consideration.”

Earlier in the day, New Zealand’s director-general of health, Ashley Bloomfield, said there were 14 new cases of COVID-19 in the country in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 53.
