Astronomers are baffled.
, objects outside our solar system unbound by any particular star, have been spotted in the universe before, but never in pairs. The European Space Agency team behind the find suggests there are two likely origin theories for the travelling twins., or ‘star nursery’, made of dust and gases – mostly hydrogen and helium. Although the dust is scattered across the nebula, gravity slowly pulls particles together, creating clumps.
‘Gas physics suggests you shouldn’t be able to make objects with the mass of Jupiter on their own, and we know single planets can get kicked out from star systems. But how do you kick out pairs of these things together?’Dr Ed Bloomer, astronomer at Royal Observatory Greenwich, said: ‘The discoveries are very intriguing, since they don’t fit neatly into what we know and regularly observe elsewhere.
