The owners could formally complete an extension for Roger Goodell, expected to be for three years, as soon as Wednesday.
with Commissioner Roger Goodell, four people familiar with the deliberations told The Washington Post.
Goodell and the owners on the compensation committee have a deal essentially completed, one of those people said. That proposed agreement is expected to be presented to the other owners Wednesday during the final day of their two-day meeting at a Manhattan hotel and, if no complications arise, the owners could ratify the extension then, according to that person. That person described Goodell’s extension as “pretty finalized.
Another person familiar with the owners’ deliberations said Tuesday night, “I think it will be discussed tomorrow.” Two others with knowledge of the matter cautioned that the deal was not finalized as of Tuesday night.Goodell’s contract expires in the spring. The extension is likely to be for three years, running until the spring of 2027. Goodell will be 68 at that point. It’s not clear whether he intends to retire then.
The owners on the compensation committee have been negotiating the extension with Goodell for months. The deal seemed within reach when team owners met in March and again when they gathered in May, but a resolution came at neither of those meetings. If the owners do not finalize the extension Wednesday, their next quarterly meeting is scheduled for December in Irving, Tex.
