The climate-friendly heating system is already being made right here in NI with grants elsewhere making them a popular switch from oil
Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK and Ireland where you can't get a grant or government support to fit a heatpump in your home to cut emissions and your fuel bills.
It emerged during discussions at a recent NI Affairs Committee at Westminster, that Octopus Energy is building high temperature heatpumps that don't need a whole-property retrofit, at its Craigavon factory. "This also means that it can be used in homes with poor insulation. The heat pump is also super efficient and makes hardly any noise - about the same as a dishwasher, though the heat pump lives outside the house while the dishwasher lives inside."
Householders in England and Wales can apply for a £7,500 grant to have a heatpump installed their home, while in Scotland grants up to £7,500 are available - or £9,000 for households that qualify for a rural uplift. According to official figures around 68% of NI homes are heated with oil, while 72% use fires to back that up and a fifth heat their homes with gas. In England and Wales just 4% of homes are heated with oil, in Scotland it's 6% and in Ireland it was 37% in 2017 and likely to be falling through retrofit schemes.
Following the introduction of heatpump grants elsewhere in the UK, Octopus says demand for them has "gone through the roof" and it now has 100,000 customers waiting to have one fitted.A Department for the Economy spokesperson said: "The Department is due to publish a public consultation seeking views on a range of options for low carbon heat support in the coming weeks.
