In this op-ed, writer and Los Angeles native Krysta Hawkins shares the impact of Nipsey Hussle’s work on her life and the city, on the one-year anniversary of his passing.. Chills ran up my spine and tears ran down my face. I immediately prayed, “Lord, please let this be fake.” This was a line I recited several times while my body was in complete shock and I could not configure anything else to say.
It was a year ago today that rapper and humanitarian Nipsey Hussle was taken from us, and it would be a lie if I said coping with this loss has become any easier since that moment last March. However, the late rapper solidified a legacy that will live on forever, and I am grateful for his music; the baton I will always carry on my marathon.
It always feels like a spiritual encounter when I listen to Nipsey’s music. I am originally from Compton and grew up there, roughly 15 miles from Crenshaw, where Nipsey was born and raised. During the darkest times of my depression, his voice reminds me that my circumstances do not dictate my future. His lyrics motivate me to chase my immense dreams, despite the small town I currently reside in.
“Dedication, hard work plus patience,” Nipsey raps on his song “Dedication,” featuring Kendrick Lamar. “The sum of all my sacrifice, I’m done waitin’. I’m done waitin’, told you that I wasn’t playin’. Now you hear what I been sayin’.
