Nissan is creating autonomous golf balls

Golf balls using elements of Nissan's ProPilot automated drive technology have a tiny camera and electric motor that helps them find the hole.Getting self-driving cars and robotaxis on the road for the general public is progressing at a poky pace, but Nissan has found a near-term marketing application for the technology that will also please duffers who struggle on the putting green: autonomous golf balls.of its ProPilot 2.

To ensure that happens, a camera on a drone above the green determines the position of the cup from the golfer. When the ball is hit, an internal monitoring system plans a route to the hole and adjusts its trajectory. Along with small sensors, the ProPILOT golf ball has a tiny electric motor to keep it moving, Nissan says.

Similar to Tesla’s Autopilot, the latest iteration of Nissan's ProPILOT system for cars enables “on-ramp to off-ramp” hands-free driving on the highway, sticking to a preset destination entered by the human driver. The carmaker says it’s the first such system “in the world to combine this with hands-off driving capability while cruising in a single lane,” available with its Skyline model, for now only in Japan.

Much like a self-parking chair and slippers that put themselves away autonomously that Nissan previously demonstrated, it doesn’t appear to be planning to sell autonomous golf balls. Still, would-be customers can try them out at a temporary putting green at Nissan’s Yokohama, Japan, headquarters from August 29 through September 1. Nissan
