The redshirt junior's tenacity on defense flowed over to his offense. Newman collected a career-high five blocks. He also was the game's leading scorer with 18 points. Newman banked in a 3-pointer from the wing with 8:49 to go in the first half, a sign of things to come. He finished 7 of 13 from the field.The redshirt freshman continues to show growth after watching last season from the sideline.
"They were making a lot of shots we wanted them to take," Edey said."They were making a lot of tough twos. Banked a few in. We said keep playing defense the way we are, keep locking in, don’t let it discourage you."Purdue entered Thursday's game averaging 12.8 offensive rebounds per game, with Edey leading the nation individually at 5.6.
"I like our effort," Purdue coach Matt Painter said."Even though sometimes we’re not getting rebounds, we’re keeping them alive."
