CLEVELAND, Ohio — Host Avon Lake jumped out to a 17-0 lead and then the defense took over and came up with several interceptions Friday, as the Shoremen opened play in the Southwestern Conference with a 24-7 victory over Berea-Midpark. Wade Nelson scored rushing touchdowns of 14 and 42 yards and Jake Bova added a TD from a yard out for the Shoremen, 3-1 and ranked No. 14 in the cleveland.com Top 25. Bova’s score came after a 65-yard pass from Alex Affolter to Derek McCrum, who grabbed the short pass and nearly took it to the end zone, eventually being tackled from behind on the 1-yard line.
