North Korea fired 23 missiles on Wednesday, one landing off the South Korean coast for the first time since 1945.

The White House revealed the new intelligence nearly two months after first alleging that U.S. intelligence officials had determined Russian Ministry of Defence was in the process of purchasing millions of rockets and artillery shells from North Korea for its ongoing fight in Ukraine.

The finding comes after after the Biden administration in August said that the Russian military in August took delivery of hundreds Iranian-manufactured drones for use on the battlefield in Ukraine. The Biden administration says that Iran has also sent personnel to Russian-controlled Crimea to provide technical support to the Russians on operation of the drones. Iranian officials have denied they have provided drones or other support to Russia.

South Korean warplanes fired three air-to-ground missiles into the sea north across the NLL in response, the South’s military said. An official said the weapons used included an AGM-84H/K SLAM-ER, which is a U.S.-made “stand-off” precision attack weapon that can fly for up to 270 km with a 360-kg warhead.

North Korea has continuously been launching missiles over the past year in violation of multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said.AIR RAID SIRENS Ulleungdo received an air attack warning that was broadcast on national television and instructed citizens to “evacuate to the nearest underground bunker.”

North and South Korea are technically still at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.Article content
