Family members of a Watsonville woman left beneath a highway overpass with fatal injuries to her head more than 28 years ago burst into tears Thursday in a court hallway.
Just moments earlier, Santa Cruz County Superior Court visiting Judge Gary Paden ruled that defendant John Laroche would be held to answer on a charge of murder in Gloria Hassemer’s 1995 homicide, with a special enhancement for a so-called second strike serious criminal offense.
“I didn’t think it would be this hard, after so many years,” said Hassemer’s son, Richard Hassemer. “I can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. We’re just happy with all the work that the Sheriff’s department has done.” “The pain of losing her has never stopped,” Niya Hassemer said. “I think it’s as painful today as it was on June 10, 1995. So, this is huge for us to get to this point. Because, when, God willing, he is finally convicted, we can finally close this chapter and my mother can finally rest in peace.”
