CIF-San Diego Section is looking to field a minimum of 50 girls teams, possibly as soon as this fall; who will call their games?

Approved last week by the CIF State Federated Council, the girls can start playing flag football as a CIF sport this fall, the same season as the boys.

The initial response has been very positive, and the CIF-San Diego Section is looking to field a minimum of 50 teams. Some details need to be worked out: How many games will the girls play? What day will they play? Where will they practice? Who will coach the girls?Like with the boys, girls football may have trouble covering games with officials.

Last season, the boys had to move football games to Thursday and Saturday to have enough full five-man crews available for every varsity game — four for JV and freshmen contests. But where will those officials come from? The San Diego County Football Officials Association runs a vigorous recruiting campaign. And while the campaign yields results, the new officials barely cover those officials who retire or move out of the area.No one wants to see the girls use the Pop Warner method of having one or two veteran officials work with one or two newcomers. The San Diego County Football Officials Association presented its Sportsmanship Awards that include $1,000 and a trophy to five high schools.
