Medical journal says changes to the population and hours of work for docs might provide the answers

Details of a new study show that although Canada's population has increased by 43 per cent in the past three decades, the number of new medical doctors in the workforce has increased by double that amount.

The study said that unadjusted analyses showed that in the years 1987 to 2020 the physician workforce grew by 93 per cent, much faster and higher than the population growth in Canada for the same period, at 43 per cent.

The study said that the decline in the number of doctors and FTE with population adjustments for sex and age, before 2005, occurred primarily in British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and Ontario. "When excluding whole week absences, the decline is 20.6 per cent, from 54.3 to 43.1 hours per week. For comparison, Statistics Canada reported that, for the entire workforce aged 25 years and older, average weekly hours of work in the same years, including absences, declined by 9.5 per cent, from 35.7 to 32.3. Among occupations, physicians have consistently been an outlier with high hours of work," said the study.
