The state Department of Justice is grappling with a backlog on the seizure list as the number rises to more than 23,300 from 22,574 prohibited gun owners at the start of 2018, and 10,266 a decade ago.

California Atty. Gen. Xavier Becerra speaks at a news conference last year to announce the seizure of 28 firearms and 66,000 rounds of ammunition from a person who was legally barred from owning weapons.

“We have tons of cases coming in,” Becerra said. “More cases are coming in than our 50 agents can process.”for the program, a 50% increase over this year. Waldron suggested Becerra has been too busy suing the Trump administration — he has filed 46 lawsuits thus far — to make the gun program work. Becerra said that in just over the last decade, the number of known firearm owners in California has more than doubled from 927,686 in 2008 to 2,516,836 as of Jan. 1.
