Northwell Health critical care nurse Sandra Lindsay, who works in Queens, is among 17 people who will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom this year. She became the face of the COVID-19 vaccine in December 2020 when she received the first distributed dose in the U.S.
, was the first American not in a clinical trial to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and soon she will be a 2022 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
"I am just so humbled and honored to be receiving this prestigious civilian honor," Lindsay told FOX 5 NY. "It is significant for me and my family and loved ones, and I think equally or even more so for some of the groups that I represent — my Northwell Health family, of course, nurses, minorities, women, women of color, immigrants.", himself a medal recipient, will present the medal to Lindsay and several other honorees at the White House on July 7.
The White House has named 17 recipients, including actor Denzel Washington, gymnast Simone Biles, soccer star Megan Rapinoe, and former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. The medal is presented to "individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors," the White House said.The White House released this list and descriptions of recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.Simone Biles is the most decorated American gymnast in history, with a combined total of 32 Olympic and World Championship medals.
