Make your contribution now and help Gothamist thrive in 2023.Gary Jenkins, the head of New York City’s Department of Social Services, is resigning as commissioner Tuesday night, according to sources familiar with his departure but not authorized to publicly speak on the matter.

Jenkins, who was appointed by Mayor Eric Adams last February, is slated to announce his resignation in a television interview on NY1 Tuesday evening, Bob Hardt, the station’sA spokesperson for the DSS referred questions about Jenkin’s employment to the mayor's office, which did not respond to an email seeking comment. Jenkins did not return a call seeking comment.

Jenkins’ year-long tenure leading the department, which includes the Department of Homeless Services and the Human Resources Administration that oversees several public benefits programs, has been marred with turmoil and significant setbacks, including record-high homelessness, a surge in asylum-seekers entering the city’s shelters and severe staffing shortages.

Under Jenkins, the DHS shelter population has surpassed 70,000 people, the highest number since the city began keeping track more than three decades ago. The number rose as tens of thousands of asylum seekers arrived in the five boroughs since last spring, including many bussed by Republican governors of southern states with hardline immigration policies.
