She had finished unusually far back in the same race last year, and the conditions of the Huntsville, Alabama course were unfavorable.
It was humid and it had been raining for nearly two days — uncommon for the early-December, 5,000 meter cross-country event. But that aspect, and the fact that she had finished 157th in the same race a year prior, were hardly on her mind. “The whole season it was overcoming a little bit of a mental thing,” Godsey said. “It’s a very difficult sport mentally, so I think I’ve just taken it to the next level. It wasn’t just this one race that I had to overcome, it was the whole season.”
