Oceanside planners deny high-density apartment project
A six-story, block-like building that would place 146 apartments on a site previously approved for 36 townhouses was denied this week after one Oceanside Planning Commission member described the project as “hideous.”
The commission voted 2-3 on a resolution that would have approved the project, with Chair Tom Rosales and commissioners Kevin Dodds and Louise Balma opposed. The applicant has 20 days from Monday’s meeting to appeal the decision to the Oceanside City Council. Located south of Oceanside Boulevard at the end of Ditmar and Nevada streets, the 2.67-acre site is behind the city’s historic Oceanview Cemetery and a half-mile from the nearest Sprinter train station.
The project needs to be “profitable and functional as well,” said Dan Niebaum of the Lightfoot Planning Group, who represented the developer at Monday’s commission meeting. “With California and San Diego in the midst of a profound housing crisis,” cities need to build more housing in transportation corridors and promote a pedestrian-oriented environment, Niebaum said, and, “That’s exactly what this plan does.”
