About 250 to 300 students are expected to compete on May 6 and 7 ♟

CLEVELAND, Ohio – It might not garner the accolades or attention that football or basketball state titles do, but championships for high school and middle school chess competitors will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 6-7, at the International Exposition Center.Players come from across the state, chess enthusiast Roman Kowalysko said. Unlike sports, the breakdown of competition is based on skill level, not school size. Competitors’ chess ratings are based on past performances.

“There’s a decent chess scene if you look for it,” said Kowalysko, who got started with chess when he was 7 or 8. The 30-year-old received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Case Western Reserve University, where he was captain of the chess team.“It’s kind of like golf, you have different opens,” he said. “Professionals will travel around the country playing in these things.

Through chess, he said, the group aims to “improve cognitive skills, decision-making and also put people of broad demographic backgrounds together so there’s interaction between a lot of different nationalities and age groups and socio-economic levels.” Primarily a Northeast Ohio organization, the majority of Progress With Chess initiatives are “after-school chess programs in schools and recreation centers,” he said. It’s at 1 I-X-Center Dr., Cleveland. Parking is free.
