“I might come back tomorrow!,” said Herendon Durrette of Akron.
Sports betting became officially legal starting at 12:01 a.m. New Year’s Day, and it’s safe to say the casinos made some bets of their own; namely if you build a swank, comfortable sportsbook to watch games, eat, drink and gamble, the fans will show up.
The big three casinos -- Jack , MGM Northfield Park and Caesars Sportsbook at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse -- were all open for business New Year’s Day. Each venue offered a slightly different feel. All provided options for bar and food service, a variety of comfortable seating at tables and bars -- and in the case of Jack and MGM, large theater-style seats. And, of course, walls covered with enormous video screens that stretched from the floor to the ceiling.
At Caesars Sportsbook the atmosphere was considerably less Vegas casino, and more upscale sports pub. Unlike the dark, noisy casinos, with flashing neon lights and clanging slot machines, the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city make Ceasars light and airy. There are no slot machines so the atmosphere is all sports-focused. The space has bars on two levels, with plenty of tables and large screens to comfortably watch games.
“It’s great because it didn’t really cost that much,” said Mike Racatl of Akron. He put down $40 on a parlay bet that will bring in $500 if he wins.
