One dead in wrong way crash on southbound I-805 near U.S.-Mexico border [Breaking]
A minivan driver is dead after being struck by a sedan headed the wrong way in on southbound Interstate 805 near the U.S.-Mexico border Wednesday.
The crash happened just before noon just north of the spot where I-805 merges with southbound Interstate 5 in San Ysidro, California Highway Patrol officer Jesse Matias said. The two freeways merge less than a quarter-mile from the international border.Advertisement The Honda driver died at the scene. The Audi driver was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries not considered to be life-threatening, he said.
Details of the cause are still under investigation. The CHP’s online incident log indicates a 911 called said a white car was about to enter Mexico when the driver made a U-turn, headed north and crashed. Matias said a traffic alert was issued for the area, and it could last later than 2 p.m. Southbound traffic was diverted off I-805 at Camino de la Plaza.
