LONDON – Football’s richest game has been billed as “one for the romantics” as Luton Town and Coventry City clash for a Premier League spot on Saturday after decades in the wilderness. Just five years ago, both clubs were languishing in fourth-tier obscurity. Now...

The Sky Blues spent 34 seasons in the top flight until relegation in 2001, with their most iconic moment coming in 1987 when they stunned Tottenham in the FA Cup final to earn their only major trophy. But relegations in 2012 and 2017 sent Coventry into the fourth tier for the first time since 1958, while Sisu became embroiled in a damaging row over ground rent that twice forced the club into exile.

Coventry were forced to share Northampton’s ground during the 2013-14 season and played at Birmingham from 2019 to 2021 before finally returning home.Coventry City’s Gustavo Hamer celebrates scoring their first goal against Middlesbrough with teammates on May 17.
