Stray is well-timed for Annapurna.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT 2022 video game Stray will now be adapted into a film. Published by Annapurna Interactive, the video game branch of indie film studio Annapurna, Stray follows the adventuring life of a stray cat who accidentally falls into a mysterious walled city inhabited by machines, robots, and mutant bacteria. The cat seeks to leave the city and return to the surface, aided by drone companion B-12.
Per EW, a film adaptation of Stray is on a slate of upcoming features from Annapurna Animation. The Stray adaptation is reportedly in “active development.” Annapurna Animation co-leader Robert Baird spoke on adapting Stray: "This is a game that's all about what makes us human, and there are no humans in it. It's a buddy comedy about a cat and a robot, and there's such a hilarious dynamic. So, there's comedy inherent in this, but there's not one human being in this movie. I think it's one of the reasons why the game was incredibly popular, that you are seeing the world through the point of view of an adorable cat.
The Stray Adaptation Comes At A Good Time for Annapurna If Baird’s comments surrounding the Stray adaptation are any indication, this adaptation is one that will be treated with incredible care. Baird clearly has a good understanding of the “hilarious dynamic” at play between the central cat and robot, and the unique “point of view of an adorable cat.
The Stray movie comes at a great time for Annapurna Animation. Last year, the studio released the animated feature film Nimona, which was released on Netflix to positive reception and ample viewership. Like Stray, Nimona was an adapted script, this time from a graphic novel. With Nimona under their belt, Annapurna Animation has already shown its ability to create a compelling animated adaptation out of revered source material. Hopefully, Annapurna can accomplish this feat again with Stray.
