The historic Galveston home was built in 1893 for the sake of building a large home.
Original crown molding remains inside the J.C. League-Kempner House on Monday, March 6, 2023 in Galveston. The J.C. League-Kempner House, that was once listed as one of the most at-risk historic homes, is now being restored. The home was purchased in 2021 by Janie Mitcham, who has been restoring the home. Although there is still work to be done, the structure is now secure and she is planning to begin a limited number of"progress" tours in April.
Mitcham said she told her husband that he'd better pray it never went up for sale because she would buy it just to close the window. The front of the J.C. After League's death in 1916, Eliza Kempner acquired the house and it would remain in the Kempner family until 1972. Kempner had the home remodeled in 1920 to accommodate her 10 ten children and many grandchildren.The family created an economic empire Mitcham said she likes to do"sensitive remodels" of homes to keep them as historical as possible while getting them to a point where the next owner can carry on their history.
