Mezzo-soprano Maeli Gonzalez will be among the quartet of soloists for the masterpiece.

It all comes full circle for a former Lone Star College-Kingwood student who will step on the stage Saturday night at First Presbyterian Church in Kingwood to perform as one of the soloists for the beloved holiday favorite, Georg Frederic Handel’s “The Messiah.

Gonzalez, a former student, and member of the college choir, credits the faculty at the school for launching her career and sharpening her skills. “I had never heard opera before. I never did music in high school, middle school, or elementary,” she said.“I wasn't curious until I heard him sing. The hairs on my skin stood up. It impacted me so much and I thought then I’ve got to try this,” she said, excited about the possibilities.

She began her music career in 2011 under the tutelage on the piano of the late Professor of Music and Dean of Math, Education, Engineering, and Student Success Jay Whatley. “I felt so comfortable because to my right was Dr. Miller conducting. I felt like I had come full circle. He was there with me in his chair in his office the first day I signed up for classes, and now I’m next to him as one of his soloists,” she said, getting emotional.
