One of the biggest online hacker marketplaces has been taken down in an international operation headed by the FBI and the Dutch National Police.
Genesis Market specialized in selling digital identities, offering 'bots' - browser fingerprints - that had infected victims’ devices through malware or account takeovers.
Prices ranged from 70c for the basic personal data of individuals up to several hundreds of dollars for corporate accounts or access to online banking. For this, purchasers would get access to all the data harvested by the bot, such as fingerprints, cookies, saved logins, and autofill form data. Access was available for a long list of services, including Gmail, Facebook, Netflix, Spotify, WordPress, PayPal, Amazon, LinkedIn, Twitter, Zoom, and eBay.
Uniquely, buyers also received a browser designed to mimic their victim's browser. This allowed the hacker to access their accounts surreptitiously, without triggering security measures, by mimicking their usual location and operating system. Victims were subject to attacks including fraud, ransomware, sim-swapping and the theft of corporate code.
When it was taken down yesterday, Genesis Marketplace contained more than 1.5 million bot listings, totaling over two million stolen identities. In an action dubbed 'Operation Cookie Monster', raids were carried out across the globe, and resulted in 208 property searches, 119 arrests, and 97 'knock and talk' measures.now features only a message from the FBI explaining that the site has been seized and taken down.
