Re “4.0 student needed $4K to attend UCSD; then strangers stepped in” : This good-news article detailed how a successful high school student was able to start college at the campus “of his dreams,” i.e a University of California campus, rather than have to attend a community college at much lower cost.

My experience in higher education began at two community colleges, and although I later received advanced degrees from private liberal arts institutions and a UC, the faculty I encountered at the community colleges were just as qualified and dedicated as elsewhere. Moreover, the environment was more comfortable for a teenager than a big university campus would have been. Community colleges ought not be viewed as a fallback for losers.
