Opinion: Keep San Diego's civil service merit system in place [Opinion]

” : San Diego has a high number of staff vacancies and now the City Council is being urged to approve a measure to eliminate the civil service merit system in San Diego government.

No surprise, patronage is a normal progression of a “strong mayor” system. As pointed out, there are currently hiring problems across America, and Proposition B was a local self-inflicted impediment to hiring. The desire to hire political operatives has always been hampered by merit system standards for education and experience.

That is precisely what it is intended to do. But to toss requirements of education, experience, competitive testing and interviews for a quick fix in hiring is a major step in becoming Tammany Hall by the Sea. Patronage is not the answer to filling staff vacancies.This proposed ballot measure has a bad smell to it. Some of us still remember the tyranny of Bob Filner, 35th mayor of San Diego, serving from December 2012 through August 2013.
