The recent scandal about the rich—and in a few instances the famous—getting their children into colleges through payoffs made to an oily middleman has aroused the nation’s ire. Little wonder. The story has lots going for it: corruption, celebrities behaving badly, the wealthy availing themselves of what is thought to be a precious commodity by unfair means. It is the stuff from which manifestoes are made.
