Opinion: What will first-ever all-Democratic City Council mean for San Diego's future? [Opinion]
With the replacement of termed-out Republican Chris Cate by Democrat Kent Lee in District 6 and the easy re-election of three incumbents on Tuesday, the nine-member San Diego City Council will be all Democrats for the first time. The city’s transformation from perceived GOP stronghold — able to attract the party’s 1996 national convention despite Republican President George W. Bush winningof the vote in California in 1992 — to progressive hub has been striking to witness.
But will this lead to City Hall becoming a prisoner of ideological groupthink? In an election night interview, council President Sean Elo-Riverathat would be something he guards against. “We should be challenging each other and making sure we’re vetting things and asking tough questions,” he said.
