Scott Derrickson, director of 2016's DoctorStrange, says he's open to returning to the MCU for a future project in the franchise. 'I loved working with Marvel and would absolutely do it again.'
Original Doctor Strange director, Scott Derrickson, would return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a future movie. Before directing 2016’s Doctor Strange, Derrickson’s filmography mostly consisted of horror films including The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, and Deliver Us From Evil. In 2014, it was announced that Derrickson, along with Sinister co-writer C. Robert Cargill, would helm Benedict Cumberbatch’s MCU debut as the surgeon turned master of the mystic arts, Stephen Strange.
On top of being an origin story for Stephen Strange, Phase 3’s Doctor Strange touched upon concepts like the Mirror Dimension, Dark Dimension, and, of course, the multiverse. Following its critical and commercial success, Derrickson was set to direct the sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but left the project due to creative differences between him and Marvel Studios. Still, despite leaving the MCU, apparently Derrickson would be open to returning for a third film.
Following Derrickson’s departure from Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man movie icon and fellow horror aficionado Sam Raimi was brought in to replace him — a move Derrickson has more than supported by praising Raimi and his talents. In addition to Cumberbatch, the sequel will see McAdams, Wong, and Ejiofor will reprise their roles from the first Doctor Strange film. Joining them is Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Xochitl Gomez in her MCU debut as heroine America Chavez.
During the premiere of Marvel's What If…?’s season 1 on Disney+, Derrickson took to Twitter praising the episode"What If... Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?” which essentially reworked the story of his original film. That episode introduced fans to Doctor Strange Supreme/Evil Doctor Strange, who appears to make the transition to live-action in the new trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
