The New York foundry that makes the Oscar statuettes has built a reputation as one of the best in the world

By Tyler Blint-Welsh Nov. 11, 2019 1:03 pm ET Ivan Goodman says he has trouble sculpting one part of the 60 Oscar statuettes he makes for the Academy Awards.Mr. Goodman is part of a team at UAP Polich Tallix, a foundry in New York’s Hudson Valley, that has made the Oscars past two years. The foundry has quietly built a reputation as one of the best in the world, having worked with artists such as Richard Serra and Roy Lichtenstein over the past five decades.

They also fabricated Nicole Eisenman’s balcony installation for the Whitney Museum of American Art’s 2019 Biennial, and on Saturday installed a 22-foot sculpture by Hank Willis Thomas that will permanently sit at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge near Tillary Street. Jamie Perrow, the principal designer of UAP, the Australian firm that acquired the foundry earlier this year, said that the foundry’s increasing public profile was the result of years of consistency.

The foundry’s location is in a growing creative hub, just minutes from Storm King Art Center, the museum Dia:Beacon, and a number of intimate galleries and artist studios. Its presence has attracted local artists in search of a community. The foundry’s founder, Dick Polich, moved the foundry to its current location in 1996, and since then its presence has attracted dozens of artists to the Hudson Valley.
