Director Patty Jenkins is giving up after no female directors were nominated for best director at this year's Academy Awards.
“I say that even with all of their push to have diversity. The numbers are just hugely imbalanced of who votes for these things," Jenkins said.Jenkins directed both Wonder Woman and its sequel Wonder Woman 1984.
"I sort of just stopped paying attention to it. It’s still going to take a long ways to go. It’s going to take a lot more to really see truly more diverse awards. I really appreciate the efforts that they’re making, but we have a long way to go," she told Variety. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Schienert won the Oscar for best director on Sunday for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Also nominated were Martin McDonagh for The Banshees of Inisherin, Steven Spielberg for The Fabelmans, Todd Field for Tar, and Ruben Ostlund for Triangle of Sadness.A new report from ReFrame, a nonprofit group, said that"the number of films directed by women remains stagnant over the last several years."
In 2022, the organization revealed that only 29 of IMDbPro’s Top 100 films were given its stamp of approval, signifying"gender-balanced hiring."
