The concept is first introduced in the third episode of the sophomore season after a heartbroken Ed Teach reverts to his ruthless Blackbeard ways in the wake of Stede Bonnet's departure.
Ed almost kills Izzy Hands in Our Flag Means Death season 2 when the crew voices concerns about the "toxic atmosphere" aboard the Revenge. Later, Ed steers the ship directly into a raging storm, forces Jim and Archie to fight each other for his own amusement, and threatens to fire a cannonball at the Revenge's mast. Understandably, all of this encourages the crew to fight back, which lands a mutinied Ed with some life-threatening injuries — and a trip to the so-called Gravy Basket.
The series doesn't send Ed to the pirate afterlife of Davy Jones's Locker. Instead, the Gravy Basket is a nether realm situated between life and death. Being in Our Flag Means Death's pirate limbo isn't all fun and games for Ed. First, he realizes that Ben is a manifestation of his own self-loathing. While in the Gravy Basket, Ed admits his deep-seated fear of being too unlovable.
All of those harsh truths cut deep, reshaping Ed's view of himself and life. Moreover, it was a delightfully weird experience that culminated in Ed seeing a vision of Stede as a mermaid. Buttons claims that the near-death experience, and all the Gravy Basket's oddities, have left Ed unable to "tell what's real and what's the Basket anymore.
