Overcoming the challenges of getting through college paid civicnation
I came from an environment that was filled with drugs, crimes, and murders and many of the Black males in my neighborhood were not motivated to go to college. My mom played a major role in helping influence me to pursue higher education – she was a single parent who only wanted to see me succeed, do better than her , and not give into the street life. My high school counselor also played a role in allowing me to see that college was an option and that I had a lot of potential to make it through.
When I graduated from Towson, I decided to get a Master’s degree at the University of Baltimore to not only further my education,but to also expand my reach in helping other first-generation students out there to realize their potential, and to show that they too can rise above any odds––no matter what obstacles are in their way.
