Acting Secretary of State Al Schmidt reported some sporadic minor and isolated issues at polling places around the state during Tuesday's primary.
Acting Secretary of State Al Schmidt said aside from road construction in York County that blocked access to a polling place, other issues that arose during Tuesday's primary were routine and didn't result in turning voters away from polls. May 16, 2023 Screenshot from Commonwealth Media ServicesWith only a “few minor and isolated issues occurring,” Pennsylvania’s top election official reported Tuesday’s municipal primary went smoothly.
He said the Department of State worked with the utility company, the construction company and others to correct the issue and the county successfully petitioned the county court to extend the hours at that polling place until 9:30 p.m. to accommodate any voter inconvenienced by the road work earlier in the day.
“The issues that we saw as I said were fairly routine, did not result in voters being turned away,” he said. “A voting machine was down. Voters can still cast a vote by provisional ballot and have that ballot counted. So that is the thing that is of utmost importance in making sure that whatever problems you face, voters can still cast their vote uninterrupted on or before 8 p.m. this evening.”
